It all started with one post on New York Times India blog. It was a serious matter & everything was going behind the curtail.
According to the post Union Minister of Telecom & IT, Kapil Sibal has asked top officials from the Indian units of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook to pre-screen content being uploaded to the social website. While Mr. Kapil Sibal is giving justification of his statement, few events which has happened in past shows that the current government in India wants to curtail the independent voice of citizen of India.
Personal attack can not be condoned, irrespective of the medium and person who makes. But aren't there sufficient provisions in the Indian law to prevent such abuses, and prosecute the offenders. The cyber laws also provide the enforcement agencies enough tools and legal means to prevent imposters from spreading malicious rumor.
Mr. Kapil Sibal has offered various justifications including National Security, Religious sentiments, etc. which sounds completely hollow & contrived. Citing examples of National Security is completely baseless given that many other loopholes have not been addressed and the vibrant social media platform has been unduly targeted.
The timing of this move is also questionable given that the govt. is taking these steps at a time when the public anger against the government is increasing everyday due to corruption, large scale scams and price rise. This attempt along with the new guidelines for TV and Radio Channels, demonstrates the governments intent to curtail public voice against the its failure and misgovernance.
"India Against Internet Censorship" believes that taking any such action on Internet content will harm democratic & credibility of this medium and puts the Freedom of Speech right at peril.
